In 1982, Fred Fricke used forensic techniques to establish an elemental profile of the cyanide used in the infamous Tylenol tampering that killed seven persons in Chicago. The FDA became more and more involved with forensic analysis and in 1990 established the Forensic Chemistry Center. Every year the Center receives samples from intentional product tampering of foods as well as unintentional contamination such as that of seafood during the Deep Water Horizon oil spill. The Center is also responsible for analysis and detection of counterfeit pharmaceuticals and of supplements which may contain undisclosed pharmaceutical actives.
Fred Fricke was the Director of the FDA Forensic Chemistry Center from 1990 to 2012. He was responsible for founding a network of federal and state laboratories to respond to terrorist attacks on our food supply, and he founded the International Laboratory Forum on Counterfeit Medicines.
