Vice Chair, Community Relations Committee
Dan Jones will be chair. Vice chair is still needed. Community Relations is a major ACESS committee and interacts with the STEM community. It's responsible for the Sponsored Awards side of two major science fairs. ACESS is planning other activities in which Community Relations will also be involved.
Desired Qualities of Respondent:
We seek organized persons willing to conduct the Sponsored Awards side of two science fairs and to provide leadership and support to the overall Fairs. It's hard work and requires he Chair to be present all day on two long Saturdays. But the Fairs are managed by competent and convivial people, and Brent Sisler, who has served as Community Relations Chair for many years, is happy to train a new Chair.
Scope / Commitment:
The principal function of the Community Relations Chair is to conduct the “sponsorship” side of two science fairs, Akron Science & Technology Expo (ASTE) in January and Western Reserve District 5 Science Day (WRD5SD) in March. Brent sends by US mail to the local corporate entities (for money, to be sent directly to the Fairs) and by email to the sponsoring technical/professional societies (for awards, to be sent to Brent or brought to the Fairs), both in December. Two jobs are in transition here: Brent as Community Relations Chair and his Associate Chair, who did the job eleven years ago before Brent took it over, and who still helps Brent every year. Brent will not handle the fairs in spring 2019, so we need to identify two new members of the Community Relations Committee. Stakeholders include Katrina Halasa, who runs ASTE in January, and Sheila King, who runs operations for WRD5SD with Ali Dhinojwala at UAkron and also the qualifying Northeast Ohio Science Fair as well as qualifiers to NEOSEF in Cleveland. It’s fine if candidates are new to ACESS! ACESS is pleased to offer these positions to committed members of the tech and STEM communities. What do these jobs involve? ASTE and WRD5SD solicit for funds. The Community Relations Chair solicits the business community for funds (providing visibility and contacts for ACESS), and establishes contacts with the UAkron faculty and students who provide most of the “people power” on WRD5 Fair Day. (Thank you’s to the donors have been handled by the Fair coordinators themselves, not by Brent.) ASTE solicits for community exhibitors in addition to money and all of them are great contacts for ACESS. For example, member society ASCE runs a bridge building contest upstairs, as their own event. Both Fairs require two members, each with a laptop computer (loaded with Fair exhibitor contact information in Excel) and one with a printer, to be present all day. They register all “sponsored awards judges”, list the prizes being offered, provide sponsored awards judges with lists of exhibits, receive their prizes, fill out and print certificates for the winners, store the certificates with their prizes, prepare a list of prizes and winners for the awards ceremony, hand out the prizes, and email the contact information for the awardees to the sponsoring entities after the Fair. It’s a very full day and may trail over into the next day for disseminating by email to the sponsoring entities.
Please fill in the following information. It will be emailed to the submitter referencing the above listing.
